Plants & Mindfulness; What’s the Connection?

“A technique in which one focuses one’s full attention only on the present, experiencing thoughts, feelings, and sensations but not judging them.”

We hear about mindfulness all the time, with it often becoming synonymous with meditation. Whilst meditation can be great for clearing the mind, there are plenty of simple and small life changes you can take to make you more mindful without you having to actively practice ‘being mindful’.

One of the easiest, most accessible ways to be more mindful is through plants, whether that be in a garden, or a house plant. Being around nature doesn’t just help with being mindful however, but is also a great way to reduce stress.

We will go in to all of this below but if you aren’t particularly good with caring for plants then our artificial plants are a great way of still reaping some of the benefits, without having the stress of keeping them alive.

How can plants help reduce stress?

There are many scientific studies proving that plants help to reduce stress, and with our modern lives being so busy it’s unsurprising that being around the natural world can help achieve a sense of calm.

  1. According to a study published in the Journal of Physiological Anthropology interaction with indoor plants, such as touching and smelling them, can reduce physiological and psychological stress, that’s why keeping lavender in the bedroom can have calming effects and help you sleep.
  2. The soil your plants are potted in contains microbes called “outdoorphins” which are said to act as a natural antidepressant. Joey Doherty, a Certified Wellness Counsellor says “it boosts your mood by releasing cytokines, which then leads your brain to produce more serotonin.”
  3. Greenery is good for the mind, body and soul, so as we spend so much of our time indoors, bringing the outside in can help us feel calmer. The colour alone can boost your mood.

There are a range of other health benefits that house plants bring too, such as purifying the air.

Caring for a plant takes us away from our thoughts and back to the present moment by taking care and nurturing something. Caring for something else and reaping the benefits of what you’ve sowed can subsequently allow us to take better care of ourselves.

The main benefits come with continuous care, so we recommend the following:

Grow a Plant

Growing a plant from seed is one of the most rewarding ways to do it, as you’re not only creating something from scratch but can see results day by day.

Sunflower seeds are particularly good for this as within a couple of days of planting them you will start seeing results. Once a little bit of greenery comes through they will surprise you with how quickly they grow.

Buy some seeds from your local garden centre and plant them in some fresh soil around late February or early March. You will need to place them on a windowsill so they get lots of light and can be placed in a small pot or even a used teabag if you want to minimise waste. Give them a small amount of water everyday, just enough to keep the soil damp and watch them flourish.

Care For A Plant

Ongoing care of a plant can be tricky, with the constant conundrum of whether you’ve watered them too much, or too little. After killing countless amounts of house plants (sorry, plants) it’s extremely rewarding to find the right recipe, not only keeping your plants alive but also watching them thrive.

Get Gardening

Gardening is a no brainer as it reconnects you with the earth, allowing you to really connect with nature. You don’t need a big garden to reap the benefits of gardening, even if all you have is a balcony you can still add potted plants that you’ll need to continuously care for.

Small spaces are great for growing a range of herbs and veggies, that way you not only have the satisfaction of caring for your plants but are also growing your own food. Mega sustainability points.
